Our
nominated charity will be James’ Place.
In the past we have selected smaller charities for which our modest
donation can hopefully make a real difference.
I was introduced to James’ Place by a regular participant in our
competitions and I immediately thought it would be a great choice for our Masters 2024 competition.
Suicide is the single leading cause of death for men under 50 – around
3000 every year in the UK. The charity was set up by Clare Milford Haven and
Nick Wentworth Stanley in 2008 after their son James unexpectedly died at the age
of 21.
About
James’ Place James’ Place saves the lives of men in
suicidal crisis.
A message from
Alex Abberton, Fundraising Manager of the James’ Place
charity.
It
costs around £2500 for one man to be supported through our specialist
intervention. This pales against the estimated £1.7m cost to the public purse
of just one death by suicide, let alone the lifetime of devastation and loss
experienced by those bereaved by suicide. It is important to remember that
anyone can experience a suicidal crisis – 75% of men who take their own lives
do not have a mental health diagnosis but reach a point of crisis largely
driven by adverse life events including relationship breakdown, job loss,
financial worries, illness or bereavement. In the City of London, men in high
pressured roles are in an at risk group and men
between the ages of 50-55 are at the highest risk. Increasing awareness about
what we do can, therefore, be lifesaving. Men can self-refer and many do. Professional
therapists get quickly to the heart of a man’s suicidal crisis and help him
solve it. Treatment is quick to access
and delivered in a safe, friendly, non-clinical environment by trained,
professional therapists. The charity has
centres in Liverpool, London and Newcastle, which are calm and welcoming – like
a home. We have treated over 1,800
suicidal men since 2018, delivering over 7,500 therapy sessions.
