Open 2023

Final Standings

Well that’s it.  Brian HARMAN was a very deserved winner I thought.  He only wobbled a couple of times and each time came back with back to back birdies.  In those conditions, it was an incredible achievement.

There were some huge swings in the race for prize money in the last few holes.  FLEETWOOD’s treble bogey on the par 3 17th was a shocker.  And there were a few important birdies on the 18th , including YOUNG, HOVLAND, RAHM and FLEETWOOD.

Huge congratulations to Adam Dix with a score of 19 under, 3 shots clear of the nearest competitor.  I am not sure I had mentioned Adam’s name before and I’m not sure where he came from, but 6 under on both Saturday and Sunday certainly helped.  Bad luck to the contenders that fell away towards the end – golf can be a cruel game!

The biggest winners are the charities.  £5,927 to the Ichthyosis Support Group and £245 to The BESOM Camberley.  That takes total donations since 2019 to over £50,000, which is amazing.  Thanks to you all for your continued support of this competition.

Back in April, for the Masters competition, the person that picked the best golfers actually ended up winning (jointly) the competition but that is quite rare.    Guy Jewell remained with the best choices: - FOWLER (23rd), FLEETWOOD (10th), HARMAN (1st), MCILROY (6th), RAHM (2nd), HO - £VLAND (13th).  Great picks but he finished 214th with bottom quartile hole selection.

The best round on Sunday was shared between Cameron St Pierre and Harryledger1 - £150 each

Other prizes: -

Pars – David Piggott 1 came through with 57

Birdies – There was a 5-way tie but only 1 of those were not already in the top 10 (and therefore winners of larger prizes).  So Coppy 7 takes the prize – a consolation after leading at the end of the 3rd round.

Bogeys – Bad luck to Nicseymour who seemed to lead the Bogey table for a long time.  However, the winners were Durragh Durkan and Becky Fry.  They share the prize.

Missed Cut table winners : -

1 Missed Cuts – Jdcallstars

2 Missed Cuts - Suzhedges2

3+ Missed Cuts – Paulwilkinson and John Belchier 3

Closing in on prizes (73% holes played)

Vivalex 2 now has a share of the lad in PARS (53) with Natalie Quilter 1 and David Piggott 1

Matt Seers and Coppy 7 lead the BIRDIES (21)

Darragh Durkan leads the BOGEYS (21)

jdcallstars leads the Missed Cut 1 table on 13 under

Fergus Graham and Nina R lead the Missed Cut 2 table on 11 under

Adam Matues and John Belchier 3 lead the Missed Cut 3+ table on 5 under

Sunday prize

Cameron St Pierre (a former prize winner) is on a tear today at 7 under

Bogeys galore

Darragh Durkan has found 6 bogeys today and has nipped ahead of Nicseymour

Missed Cut Tables

John Belchier 3 is in 1323rd position but leads the Missed Cut 3+ table, helped by one of SCHEFFLER's birdies today.

A possee of Adam Matues, Bazzzzaaaaa, Bissman Sars and Woody99Ii in close pursuit

Sunday prize

Flush Gordon, Jonhankins, Cameron St Pierre and Andrew Fraser 2 lead on Sunday so far on 4 under par

Average score today is +1

Tough conditions today - the average of those out on the course and already in the clubhouse is +1

Scoring on the course

Thenumber of holes scored under par by the golfers was 15% on Thursday and 14% on Friday. On Saturday it was up to 19%.

Today's conditions suggest it will back down again - currently at 14% though we have had 2 eagles with only 29% of holes played (3 yesterday)

In our competition, there are 4 people with 2 eagles Zlewis, Martinheath1 , Oliver Day and Malcolmbell

Who Picked the Best Golfers?

I didn't talk about this yesterday in the review of the 3rd round because I ran out of time before boarding a flight and because, quite frankly, I wasn't sure about the numbers I was looking at. On Saturday there were some amazing scores.

Bifco Roly had the pick of them - his 6 golfers were a total under par of -26. FITZPATRICK, HATTON, RAHM, SMITH, SCHAUFFELE, HOVLAND

Guy Jewell has the best cumulative golfers FOWLER, FLEETWOOD, HARMAN, MCILROY, RAHM, HOVLAND. An amazing 32 under over the first 3 rounds and unsurprisingly none of them are out on the course yet. Great picks Guy. Sadly hole selection was not great.

Having said that there are many people that kept all 6 golfers through to the weekend but with terrible hole selection. For example Vinny.pnonusa picked the 24th best golfers but finds himself in 1141st position. Bad luck.

Dermot Joyce

Dermot is an old colleague of mine (and a star of the Game of Thrones series). I have invited him to my golf competitions since I started in 2009. This was his first year of entering and he is now 6th in the table, helped by the early birdie from SCHEFFLER . Welcome Dermot and to the other 199 new players!

Sunday - early tee off

The golfers were out early this morning. The leaders tee off at 2.15pm (UK time)
Already we have some people on 4 under - Jonhankins and Anthony O thanks to eagles from DECHAMBEAU and SCOTT

Jennie Corfield takes the lead on 14 under

Joyce Rossiter set an early pace but challengers are closing in. But will the weather stall that charge?

Jonny Meardon 4 now leads the Pars

Emile Visser 1 also up there challenging for the Birdie comp as well as being 3rd in the main table.

Current leaders

Pars - new leader David Piggott 1 on 40

Birdies - Jon Hynes leads with 17 (and leads main table by 2 shots)

Bogeys - Nicseymour way out in front with 18 (2nd place has 15)

Saturday - Joyce Rossiter on 8 under leads (down in 366th place)

Fowler off to a fast start

Bt 1 , Davie C's Squad, Dudley Mcpudley , George Williams 1,Mickiw, Craeg Deery, Fayeleeman Gaston Le Chef 1, Matt Hawkes, Corf1, Simon Woodcock all had Fowler on the 2nd and the 4th. They all lead the Saturday table with those 2 birdies. Great start.
Dave C's Squad is now 44th in the table.

Saturday Prize

Remember that the bogeys scored by the golfers that missed the cut do not count towards the daily prizes on Saturday and Sunday.

The CUT (amended)

It seems that my calculations last night were a bit off and it is actually only 25% of entries that got through to the weekend. The average number of golfers lost was 1.02 and there were in fact 2 entries which lost 4 golfers.

The CUT

We are heading towards the halfway stage of the tournament at which point only the top 70 golfers (and ties) will proceed to the weekend. Any golfers that miss the cut will score bogeys in rounds 3 and 4. That typically changes the appearance of the main table quite significantly. If you get all 6 golfers through to the weekend, well done. Not all that easy to do.

Based on my back of envelope calculations I reckon the average number of golfers lost to the cut is only 0.6 and 49% of entries will carry all 6 into the weekend. It will depend on the exact cut line (could be +2 or +3).

But even if you lose a couple of golfers, the prizes for Saturday/Sunday exclude your missed cut golfers and there are also tables for people that lost 1/2/3 golfers. A lot still to play for.

Friday Lunchtime standings

We are about 25% of the way through the 2nd round. Are those Just Stop Oil protesters or Ricky Fowler supporters?
Alex Hance has a 2 shot lead in the race for the Friday prize on 7 under - after just 10 holes.
Be handy if I had 10 people helping me look for my lost balls in the long grass (Lamprecht)

Pars - Andy Chalkley leading with 23
Birdies - a 13-way tie on 9
Bogeys - Andychesnutt leading with 11 (1617th position)

Leaderboard - Patrick and Bissman are joined by Robbie Marshall and Matt Astbury on 8 under

Natasha Kersey has the best golfers today so far

Friday - Round 2

Michael Bonallack goes into an early lead thanks to a WOODLAND birdie on the 1st hole

Thursday prize

It has been incredibly tight at the top of the table today but Benz moves to 7 under to lead the way to the daily prize.

Tom Hardy is leading the Birdie table (8) but is only 3 under for the day.

Fowler on 18th? 64 people suffered from the treble bogey - including me.

Other Prizes

Shane Nimmo 2 has 9 pars out of 9 holes. If he keeps that up, its worth a prize.

Scoring has started

Ab Normal 1 and Ab Normal 2 are joint leaders on 2 under thanks to a good start by Ryan FOX
